The short documentary film project “QUIET DEPTHS” was our attempt to break out of routine. In late 2021, without a detailed script or a main character, we ventured beyond the Arctic Circle to the Seglvik Peninsula, accessible only by ferry—leaving us isolated from the world. On site, we received support from the “Valhalla Orca Expedition.”
Every morning, we battled strong waves on military boats and shot on land in extreme conditions. Our main heroine, Cindy Ogorzali—a nature photographer, expedition captain, and marine biologist—emphasized the importance of preserving nature.
I was the project’s DOP, and I must note that it was one of my first projects with director Nikolas Meyberg. Thanks to Patagonia’s support, I had my first opportunity to work on large-scale underwater filming: capturing whales and orcas in -20…-25°C conditions was incredibly challenging, but the experience was invaluable. Moreover, the limited daylight (3–4 hours) and Cindy’s simultaneous role as skipper added to the challenges. We made every effort to minimize our ecological footprint at all stages of production to preserve pristine nature and wildlife.
